The Jazz Standard
A palette in tribute to rhythm and soul.

Marking the 100th anniversary of Bessie Smith’s 1925 recording of St. Louis Blues, The Jazz Standard is a moody, expressive composition that channels the emotion, elegance, and edge of early American jazz. Like the music that inspired it, this palette is layered, textural, and composed with deliberate rhythm.

The story begins with black ceramic tile carved in deep triangular flutes, bringing dimensionality and visual tempo. Its dark, sculptural form adds a grounded base—much like a steady upright bass line—creating shadow and repetition that draw the eye across the surface. Boldly colored, haired hide injects an improvisational flair, offering tactile richness and a splash of attitude that feels spontaneous yet purposeful.

Burnt orange wool-blend velvet adds warmth and saturation, softening the visual intensity while nodding to the plush interiors of jazz clubs and lounge seating. The material speaks to both comfort and drama, like a blues vocal that lingers in the room.

Bisque-embossed leather introduces a more refined note, balancing the bolder elements with a tonal softness and crafted detail that suggests vintage elegance. At the same time, a brown wallcovering inlaid with metallic foil brings ornamentation and glow, catching the light like a brass horn under a low spotlight.

The palette evokes the layered emotion of a jazz standard, smooth in some moments, brassy in others, but always composed with soul. Each material functions like a note in an arrangement: distinct, expressive, and essential to the harmony.

The Jazz Standard pays tribute to the legacy of early jazz with a mix that’s bold, emotive, and enduring, an ode to a genre that defined an era and continues to inspire design with depth, rhythm, and heart.
